Late Saturday night close to 11:30 pm, the N.C. State Highway Patrol were called to a head-on crash in Taylorsville that killed 2 people with 2 others taken to the hospital with injuries, including a juvenile, according to officials.
Joshua Lance Mayberry, a 36-year-old citizen of North Wilkesboro, was unable to escape his vehicle, a 2002 Cadillac Escalade SUV, and died at the scene. The juvenile who has been hospitalized for life-threatening injuries, has yet to be identified, was a passenger in the same vehicle.
The driver of the other car, a 1991 Mazda Miata, died at the scene as well, also unable to get out of his car. The driver has been identified as Justin Ryan Combs, a 29-year-old resident of Wilkesboro.
Officials said the incident began as the Escalade crossed the centerline on N.C. 16 while traveling south near Mount Olive Church Road. The Escalade hit the Mazda Miata traveling north on the other side of N.C. 16, striking them head-on. After the collision, the Escalade spun out of control and was struck by another car traveling north on N.C. 16. This second collision claimed Mayberry’s life. The driver of the third car involved in the accident was taken to Wilkes Regional Medical Center in the city of Wilkesboro with minor injuries.
N.C. 16 remained closed for two hours to allow officials to investigate the accident and is now open. The N.C. State Highway Patrol stated that there is no indication that any of the drivers were impaired and stated all victims involved were wearing their seat belts.
