A woman and her son passed away after a police car struck their minivan during a police chase on Friday, September 8th. Police were attempting to pull over a motorcycle that was driving recklessly and without a license plate on Highway 70 near Fourth Street Southwest at roughly 10:30 p.m.
The motorcycle fled when the officer tried to pull it over, causing the police to chase it. During the pursuit, a Honda Odyssey minivan drove into the intersection of Highway 70 and 13th Street and was struck by the officer. The driver of the police car has been identified as 24-year-old Officer Atia Mohamed Shamseldin.
More officers arrived at the scene and tried to administer aid to the victims in the Honda before EMS and the Hickory Fire Department arrived. 38-year-old Cynthia Nicole Lail died at the scene and her son, 12-year-old Michael Lail was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. On Sunday, the boy passed away from his injuries.
Shamseldin and the passenger in the police vehicle were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Shamseldin is under investigation and is currently on administrative leave.
