An SUV driver was hit and killed by an oncoming tractor-trailer. The crash occurred at approximately 2 a.m. on Monday, October 16th, on I-77 North near the 32-mile marker, which is two miles south of Ridgeway. The victim has been identified as 44-year-old Herbert Cayruth Nelson III, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The collision involved Nelson’s 2008 Hummer H3 SUV and a 2024 Freightliner tractor-trailer. Nelson’s SUV went off the road, striking a guard rail, and went back onto the interstate. While the Hummer was on the road disabled from that crash, the tractor-trailer heading north on I-77 struck the Hummer.
The driver of the tractor-trailer did not sustain any injuries from the crash, but a passenger suffered minor injuries and was taken to Providence Health in Columbia.
