A head-on collision killed one person and injured another on Tuesday afternoon October 17th. The crash closed all lanes of Interstate 85 Business between Baker Road and Interstate 74 for several hours.I-85 Business South was closed at 1:47 p.m.The road was reopened around 7 p.m.
At roughly 1:40 p.m., first responders were sent to US 29 South near Baker Road in response to a traffic crash with reported injuries. When responding units arrived, they learned a Toyota pickup truck crossed the median and hit a tractor-trailer head-on. The pickup truck then crashed into an SUV that was behind the tractor-trailer. Investigators say the pickup truck driver lost control after swerving to go around a vehicle that was slowing to make a right turn onto Durand Avenue.
The driver of the pickup truck has been identified as 56-year-old Leo P. Rideaux, who was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to a hospital with injuries. The driver of the other vehicle did not sustain any injuries from the crash.
