Mother of 3 Killed in Mooresville Crash on I-77, Another Critically Injured – Suspect Charged with DWI
A tragic car accident occurred on the northbound lanes of Interstate 77 in Iredell County on Tuesday evening of August 1st, with the crash claiming the life of one woman and leaving another in critical condition.
Bret Edward Shove, 48, from Wilkesboro, was driving a 2000 Ford F-150 north in the High Occupancy Vehicle Lane Tuesday night. According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol who arrived at approximately 8 pm, Shove had failed to reduce speed and collided with a stationary 2016 Toyota Scion that had broken down in the HOV lane.
Following the initial collision, the Ford spun to the right, subsequently hitting a 2014 Ford Escape, also traveling north on the interstate.
The tragic incident claimed the life of Misty Leigh Shook, 47 and mother of three, who died at the scene. Shook, a resident of Granite Falls, was the driver of the stationary Scion. Another person who was the passenger in the Scion was rushed to the hospital at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in critical condition. Shove sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to Atrium Health CMC. Fortunately, both the driver and passenger of the Ford Escape were unharmed in the car accident.
Following the crash, lanes closed on northbound I-77 was closed for several hours, causing significant traffic delays until reopening prior to midnight.
The initial investigation by troopers from the Highway Patrol indicates impairment to be a contributing factor to the collision. Shove has since been charged with driving while impaired, failure to reduce speed, and other traffic violations. As the investigation continues, in consultation with the Iredell County District Attorney’s Office, more charges are expected to be filed against Shove.
