A man from Georgia passed away early Saturday morning in a crash in South Carolina, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office. 36-year-old Stephen A. Hicks, an Augusta resident, died in the crash. The single-vehicle collision happened around 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the Graniteville area.
Hicks was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado east on Chalk Bed Road, near the intersection with Breezy Hill Road. The pickup truck drove off the right side of the road. Hicks’s pickup truck hit a mailbox, then crashed into a tree, and flipped over. Hicks was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. He suffered blunt-force injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Hicks was the only person in the Chevy, and no other injuries were reported.
Information about what caused Hicks to drive off the road is not available at this time, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office. A toxicology analysis is underway.
