An employee working for a contractor of the N.C. Department of Transportation passed away Thursday morning, August 17th while working on the Interstate 26 widening project in Buncombe County.
29-year-old, Russell L. Penley of East Flat Rock, was killed after being run over by a bulldozer. Penley was engaged in a surveying operation in close proximity to a bulldozer when he was hit. The driver of the bulldozer was reversing and didn’t see Penley, resulting in Penly being run over by the bulldozer.
The NCDOT spokesperson did not provide any more details about the accident but said the employee was killed in a tragic “accident” that took place outside of traffic between the Long Shoals Road and Airport Road exits.
