Why Are We Telling You To Tie One On?

We aren’t telling you to “tie one on” in the way that you may think—just the opposite. Every year, from November 1st through December 31st, MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) makes the request that you display a red ribbon on your vehicle.

The reasoning behind this is to remind people to always have a designated driver. The last two months of the year are associated with holidays, parties (with alcohol), gatherings, and travel. These are meant to be special times, and the red ribbon is meant to remind people of how important it is to choose a designated driver.

Tips For Keeping The Holidays Safe

One of the most heartbreaking aspects of drunk driving accidents is how preventable they are. By foregoing basic precautions, you put yourself, your future, and most importantly, other people at risk.

If you are going to a party, take an active stance on choosing a designated driver ahead of time—or simply choose not to drive. Even if you are traveling to the party alone, make the decision to leave your car behind and use any of the several ride-sharing options available to anyone with access to the internet—which is practically everyone.

The option is to not drink. In other words, volunteer yourself to be the designated driver. It is an easy and selfless act you can do for your friends, family, and loves ones during the holidays. And lastly, take control of your own actions by never getting into a car with someone who has been drinking.

Hosting A Party

If you are hosting a holiday party—whether at your home or at the office—be vocal about people needing designated drivers. Ask your guests if they have ways of getting home and even find transportation if needed.

As a host of a party, look out for your guests, especially if you are providing them with alcohol. Take the extra step to create one-of-a-kind mocktails for the people who have chosen not to drink.
