A man passed away while he was riding his lawnmower. While on his lawnmower he collided with an SUV on a dark Catawba County road. The incident occurred around 8:20 p.m. Saturday, September 16th, just east of the Rock Barn Country Club and Spa near Claremont. The scene of the accident is about 45 miles northwest of Uptown Charlotte.
A 2001 Honda Passport was traveling south on Shook Road when it hit a riding lawn mower. 59-year-old Phillip Michael Brooks, the operator of the mower was ejected from the mower and critically injured. He was transported by EMS to Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory, where he later died due to his injuries from the accident. The Honda was driven by a 52-year-old man from Hickory, and he was not injured.
Investigators say the riding lawn mower did not have any lights or reflective markings on it at the time of the crash. No charges will be filed in this case.
